The Treccani cites "a movable table consisting of a horizontal top and used for various functions (the dining table, around which one sits to eat meals, is preferably called a table)"
Although the definition is unexceptionable, it seems a bit cold.......considering the fact that the table has always been considered a meeting point, not only for families, and this for centuries now.

In fact, it seems that the use of the table originates from the ancient Greeks and Romans, who used it not only as a convivial point but also for commercial negotiations or for worship.
It essentially consisted of a rectangular top on three feet or a central leg divided into three parts, the top could be made of wood, marble or even bronze.
In ancient imperial Rome, at the height of its splendour, tables were enriched with ivory, gold, silver feet and even set with rare and precious stones.

All this changed radically from the 14th century, when the table was stripped of everything, it consisted of a bare board, usually covered with a tablecloth or carpet, to be disassembled and stored after the meal.
In the period of the Renaissance they gave free rein to the imagination, typical of the period, the legs were carved in lion`s paw, chimera, acanthus leaf and the tops were also inlaid with ebony, ivory or semi-precious stones.

In the 18th century in Northern Europe, in England and France, different forms of tables were invented, such as gate tables, tables with hinged legs, tables with halved tops, large tables with terracotta tops and gilded bronze covers, small tables with drawers up to small night tables.
In Italy, since the 20th century, we have changed the concept of the table, creating different types ranging from desks to lecterns to oval tables. Our design is the result of an immense imagination and knowledge of the material.
